Pregnancy & Postpartum Treatment
Both pregnancy and the postpartum period bring profound physical, emotional, and hormonal changes. This season can be deeply meaningful, and it can also be accompanied by worsened anxiety, mood changes, sleep disruption, and overwhelming stress. Thoughtful mental health support during this time is not only safe and appropriate, it is essential.
I provide integrative psychiatric care for patients who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or navigating the postpartum period. Care is delivered with a balance of medical expertise and shared decision-making, while prioritizing both maternal and infant well-being.
Conditions Commonly Treated:
Pregnancy-related anxiety or panic
Obsessive or intrusive thoughts
Perinatal and postpartum depression
Mood instability or irritability
Sleep disturbance or insomnia
Worsening of pre-existing conditions (Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar spectrum disorders, ADHD)
Clinical Approach
-
My focus is on creating a safe and nonjudgmental space to process the emotional, psychological, and identity changes that often accompany pregnancy and the postpartum period. Sessions may address mood shifts, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, relationship stress, role transitions, and the pressures of caregiving, while reinforcing coping skills and emotional stability.
-
When indicated, medication decisions during pregnancy or postpartum are made carefully and collaboratively. Treatment is guided by current evidence, clinical guidelines, and individual history, with close attention to symptom severity, prior medication response, and reproductive considerations. The goal is to support maternal mental health while thoughtfully weighing safety concerns, including the potential risks of untreated symptoms.
-
Cognitive behavioral strategies may be incorporated to help identify and modify unhelpful thought patterns, reduce anxiety, manage intrusive or obsessive thoughts, and improve emotional regulation. These tools are practical, structured, and adaptable to the unique challenges of pregnancy and early parenthood.
-
Sleep disruption is common during pregnancy and postpartum and can significantly impact mood and functioning. Care often includes guidance on sleep hygiene, realistic routine adjustments, and strategies to support restorative sleep within the constraints of pregnancy or caring for an infant.
-
Lifestyle factors such as stress load, nutrition, activity level, social support, and daily structure are thoughtfully reviewed. Small, sustainable adjustments can meaningfully influence mental health, particularly during periods of hormonal change and increased caregiving demands.
-
When appropriate, care may be coordinated with OB-GYNs, primary care providers, therapists, or other members of your healthcare team. Collaboration helps ensure consistency, safety, and continuity across all aspects of care during pregnancy and postpartum.
-
Education is a core part of treatment. Understanding what symptoms are common, what warrants additional support, and what treatment options exist can reduce fear and uncertainty. Clear information and reassurance empower informed decision-making and help normalize the emotional complexity of this new life stage.
